Eerie things are happening at Chelford Castle at night: Since the murder of Abbot Hubert some 400 years ago, his ghost is said to haunt the abbey on dark nights. Devilish howls can be heard as he wanders through clouds of fog. Sergeant Putler, Scotland Yard's most intrepid and successful detective, is hired by Richard Chelford to investigate the case. His older brother, Lord Henry, is much more interested in the legendary treasure of gold that is said to have been hidden somewhere on the grounds since Hubert's death. The situation escalates when Henry's secretary, Mary Brown, disappears without a trace one night, and a man in a monk's habit with a knife appears in Richard Chelford's bedroom, intent on killing him. Six-year-old Anička Čejková has moved with her parents from the village to a new housing estate in Prague. For now, she and her father are alone, but her mother is due to return from the hospital soon with her newborn Ondřej. Anička gets lost during her first walk around the neighborhood, but a nice young woman helps her. She is teacher Řeháková, in whose class 1. And soon Anička will start. The first-graders like the school, and when Anička confides in them that her mother will be back soon, they decide to give her a festive welcome.

Mrs Rokos is a grandmother in her age, lives with her son's family and feels useless, that no one needs her. Therefore, she decides to move from Prague to the countryside with her friend Tuzar...

The main character, a forty-year-old doctor, tries to cope with situations that life throws at her as a successful dentist, but a less successful mother, lover, and ex-wife. The heroine's relationship with her daughter, lover, mother, and ex-husband is portrayed very convincingly and without the slightest idealization, reflecting the ambiguity and controversy of the contemporary female condition. Although the author accumulates in his novel and television script almost all the paradoxes of today's self-employed woman in the heroine, nevertheless (or precisely because of this) her story reflects the experience of most contemporary women. Especially those who place high demands on themselves and others, which, however, can rarely be met one hundred percent. And if it turns out that we owe the greatest debt to our own daughter, then it is no surprise that everything starts to change completely...
